I've done a new version of this image I'm much happier with, see the previous entry:

I presume you're working from an actual picture of the Mad Empress. You might try sourcing a sculpture image like these ones:

http://assets3.parliament.uk/iv/main-large//ImageVault/Images/id_329/scope_0/ImageVaultHandler.aspx.jpg

as they'll have a better texture to start with.

Thanks - I spent hours searching for a good statue image and didn't see the first of those two. I'll see if that works any better.

Remember that the only colour variation is going to be what's already in the stone, so darker hair, lips, and eyelashes aren't going to look true. They need to be lightened up so that they look the same colour as her "skin" tone, and for the hair you need to add lines and shadows to make it look sculpted, like Nojay's examples.

Meanwhile, I'd be tempted to sketch in a few panel lines to suggest an artifact (whether a block-based sculpture a la the Sphinx and Karnak, or a metal skin like the Statue of Liberty) to distract from other image artifacts.

Thanks - you're right, I didn't think the shading thing through. I'll have another go tonight.
