Today's Bootfair Stuff

Some bargains but a couple of duds, so not as good as I initially thought

An Apple wireless mouse (the early single button type) for £3.50, works.
A Pentax Z70 35mm SLR body that seems to work OK and supports autofocus, so I'm adding it to my pile of 35mm cameras I can use to test lenses. £3
A 52mm skylight filter and rubber hood for £1
A Casio fx-9750G graphics calculator with instructions for £3
The colour version of that, the fx-9850GB Plus, without instructions for £2 - both working well, unfortunately not the models with USB.

An iBook G3 and charger - looks like the charger is working but the iBook isn't - for £14; might be fixable, and the charger is very sellable.
A 60w magsafe charger with a damaged plug for £3 - looks like there's more wrong with it, since it doesn't work at all, but might get a pound or two for spares / repairs

Unknown at present
A Dymo business card scanner for £2 - I'll try it out tonight.
A remote control SCART / audio / video / optical switch box for £5 - really don't feel like messing around with SCART etc. today but ought to be useful if it works - this one's for me, not for selling.
A JVC video capture box which I was hoping might be suitable for backing up video tapes but the impression I get looking on line is that it is something weird that only works with JVC editing equipment - but they seem to sell at high prices so I ought to get my £2 back, even untested.

Fanfic: Torchwood / Doctor Who / Help! - ...A Little Help From My Friends

Several years ago I promised selenak that I would write a Beatles story. It took a lot longer than I expected. This is a crossover between Doctor Who, Torchwood and the film Help! (1965), in which the Beatles played a fictionalised version of themselves. While the Beatles (and some other real people) appear in this story, it is the fictionalised versions that are portrayed in this story, not the real people. Major spoilers for Help! if it’s actually possible to spoil a 50+ year old film, and a lot of plot derailing.

Unfortunately it's come out at more than 10000 words, and is apparently too big to post on Livejournal in a single post. Since I don't want to mess around with multiple posts here's a link:

Another iMac G4 complete

The 17" iMac G4 700mhz is now 1GB RAM and has WiFi - the memory arrived from Hong Kong this morning and I just installed that and the Airport card from the iBook G3, and it all works. Why anyone would want 11b wireless is another matter; the card doesn't do anything else, so WiFi will be slow and insecure, but I'll make that clear in the description when I list it on eBay - probably won't be for a week or so since I have a LOT happening next week.

And as usual I say "Never again" - they don't make huge profits, they're a ton of work, and I really don't need something that size sitting around waiting to sell. Which probably means I'll pick up another tomorrow...

Talking of which, someone had Apple Power G5 towers for £15 at the boot fair I went to today. Definitely good value, assuming they power up, and MUCH more powerful than any G4, but the combination of size and weight, huge power consumption, still not running modern software, and not being cute like the iMac G4 meant that I passed - I was already carrying enough that I wouldn't have been able to get one home anyway. Maybe another time, but they really don't push my buttons in the same way as the iMac G4.
