Net problems?

Is there any reason why it would be a bad idea to install Microsoft's .net framework software on my PC?

Reason for asking is that someone on ljgenie recced paint.net which is an excellent donationware paint program, better than my usual program, but needs the net framework to run. I've tried it on this PC at work, which doesn't have anything too vital on it, and so far it works pretty well, but I'm worried there might be bugs or security holes. Anyone know anything?
