Forgotten Futures Characters

Here are the characters for the Forgotten Futures adventure I mentioned; there probably isn't anything too bad in the way of spoilers below, but if you're going to be playing in the game I run over the weekend you probably shouldn't look behind the cut

Mr. Caldicott (a young banker)
Mr. Charters (a young stockbroker)
Miss Jane Marple (a schoolgirl, Caldicott's cousin)
Sirius (automaton dog)
Roderick Spode (Gentleman of means, would-be politician)
Beatrice (a maid)

Many, many thanks to everyone who made suggestions. It'll probably be obvious that some of these characters are composites from several suggestions (for example, my version of Caldicott is in part Wodehouse-derived, terrified of his aunt Agatha, who is Jane's mother), so I hope nobody will feel neglected.

Mr. Caldicott (A young banker)
BODY [4], MIND [3], SOUL [3], Actor [4], Athlete (cricket, Rugby, tennis) [6], Babbage Engine [6], Brawling [5], Business [5], Driving [5], First Aid [3], Linguist (French, Latin, German) [5], Marksman [6], Mechanic [2], Melee Weapon (cricket bat etc.) [5], Stealth [3]
Equipment: Luggage, clothing, Brownie camera and films, £50 in assorted currencies, small-bore shotgun and cartridges, copy of Wisden (the cricket yearbook)
Quote: "I say old chap, any idea of the test score? The test score, old boy, cricket... (mutters) bloody foreigners..."
Notes: You're a product of Britain's public school system, currently employed by the City and Continental Bank. You're doing well there, and you're about to spend a month working at the bank's Berlin office to broaden your experience. To your delight your old school-chum Charters will also be working at the Berlin branch, and you're both decided to take a couple of week's leave afterwards and try to get a little duck shooting. You plan to hire a good retriever, Charters has bought along some sort of steam dog and you'll be interested to see how well it works. You understand that your Aunt Agatha and family may be passing through Berlin while you're there, if they do turn up you suppose you'll have to entertain them. Aunt Agatha terrifies you, but hopefully they won't be stopping for long.
Role-Playing Note: Based on one of the characters in The Lady Vanishes. Traditionally your first name is never mentioned; maybe you don't like it...

Mr. Charters (A young stockbroker)
BODY [5], MIND [3], SOUL [3], Artist (sketching) [5], Athlete (cricket, Rugby) [7], Babbage Engine [4], Brawling [7], Business [5], Driving [4], Linguist (Ancient Greek, German) [4], Marksman [5], Melee Weapon (cricket bat etc.) [6], Morse Code [4], Riding [5] Stealth [3]
Equipment: Luggage, clothing, £35 in assorted currencies, small-bore shotgun and cartridges, binoculars, fishing rod etc., three novels, automaton dog (Sirius)
Quote: "A cup of tea please... no, not coffee or chocolate, tea... (mutters) bloody foreigners..."
Notes: You're a product of Britain's public school system, currently employed in the City and Continental Bank's trading department. You're doing well there, and you're about to spend a month working at the bank's Berlin office to broaden your experience. To your delight your old school-chum Caldicott has also been assigned there, and you're both decided to take a couple of week's leave afterwards and try to get a little duck shooting. Because of Britain's strict quarantine laws (introduced in 1895) you've been unable to bring your normal retriever; instead you've bought Sirius, a prototype automaton dog manufactured by one of the bank's clients. He (or it) has been loaned to you for "field testing", and you've been asked to log any problems.
Role-Playing Note: Based on one of the characters in The Lady Vanishes. Traditionally your first name is never mentioned; maybe you don't like it...

Miss Jane Marple (Schoolgirl, aged 13)
BODY [2], MIND [4], SOUL [4], Actor [4], Artist (needlepoint, watercolours) [6], Athlete (hockey, tennis, netball) [4], Brawling [2], Detective (mostly extreme nosiness) [5], Driving [3], First Aid [5], Linguist (French, German, Italian) [5], Medium ("feelings" about things) [4], Melee Weapon (hatpin, knitting needles, etc.) [2], Psychology [5], Riding [5], Scientist (nature study only) [5], Stealth [4]
Equipment: Luggage, clothes, sketch pad, water-colours, knitting needles and wool, bible, bird-watcher's guide, tennis racquet, Brownie camera and film, diary.
Quote: "I say, isn't that a lesser spotted grebe?"
Notes: You're a school-girl currently on holiday with your parents, who are spending a few weeks touring the continent. It's very interesting, especially the ancient monuments, and you've seen lots of unusual birds. When you leave Rome your next stop will be Berlin. Mummy says your cousin Caldicott is working there; you quite like him, it'll be nice to see him again.
Role-Playing Note: An extremely inquisitive girl with an instinct for noticing when something is wrong, in later life you will be a distinguised amateur detective.

Sirius (Automaton dog)
BODY [2], MIND [2], SOUL [1], Athlete (running / swimming) [4/3], Brawling [3], Retriever [3], Stealth [1], Thief [2]
Equipment: Steam engine, calculating engine, anti-phonograph (200-word English vocabulary), two monochrome eyes, propeller, light aluminium plate "skin" (no armour effect) with rubber grommets waterproofing the joints. Steel teeth and claws:
Bite, Effect [4], damage A:B, B:F, C:F
Claws, Effect [3], damage A:B, B:F, C:F
Endurance: 4 hours
Description: A mechanical dog roughly the size of a retriever. Your legs and body incorporate cork floats and there is a small propellor under your body, allowing you to swim (using your tail as a rudder) and retrive ducks from the water. Your body is more or less waterproof, but if your head is fully submerged it will flood; your boiler will go out and your calculating engine may be damaged. You carry fuel and water for four hours of operation, but either can be replenished by "eating" coal or "drinking" water.
Quote: "FETCHING THE DUCK, MASTER"
Notes: You are a machine, but somehow the combination of skills and instructions built into you have worked perfectly, and you really do behave and think like a real dog. Your SOUL represents this ability to exceed the parameters built into you. Admittedly you're a dog that eats coal and can talk, but some canine behaviour seems to be part of the package. You are built to obey orders, any ambiguous instructions should be interpreted as literally as possible. e.g., if you are told to "guard the door" you will do your utmost to ensure that the door comes to no harm. You have a bad habit of eating coal from people's coal scuttles etc. without asking first, and dumping ash on the floor. Since you are a prototype you have been instructed to report any faults or problems you experience, e.g. "THERE IS A LEAK IN THE STEAM VALVES ON MY LEFT SIDE"
Role-Playing Note: The obvious role model is Dr. Who's K9. With a small touch of Marvin the Paranoid Android, of course...

Roderick Spode (Gentleman of means, would-be politician)
BODY [3], MIND [2], SOUL [2], Actor (dramatic monologue) [3], Athlete (Cricket, Rugby, etc.) [5], Babbage Engine [1], Brawling [5], Business [2], Driving [4], Linguist (German) [1], Marksman [4], Melee Weapon (fencing) [5], Military Arms [2], Riding [4], Stealth [1]
Equipment: Notebook, £150 in assorted currencies, valet
Quote: (in VERY bad German) "So the records are updated daily? Remarkable!"
Notes: You're a great admirer of the Prussian style of social control and feel that it would be ideal for Britain. You're currently in Berlin studying the system, and have found that most Germans are delighted to extol its merits, after that you'll probably tour the country and see how it works in more isolated areas. Your only disagreement with it so far is that you feel it doesn't go far enough in regulating the movement of social undesirables such as Luddites, socialists, the poor, etc., and you are compiling a list of suggestions for improving it.
Role-Playing Note: A slightly absurd would-be dictator (stolen from P.G. Wodehouse); you will eventually found your own political party, repeatedly fail to gain office, inherit a title, and retire to the House of Lords where your views will receive a sympathetic hearing.

Beatrice (maid)
BODY [2], MIND [3], SOUL [3], Actor (public speaking) [5], Brawling [4], Driving [2], First Aid [4], Marksman [3], Melee Weapon (knitting needles, hat pins, sharp heels, etc.) [5], Scholar (socialism) [5], Stealth [4]
Equipment: Luggage, clothes, hat pins, knitting, suffragette and socialist pamphlets.
Quote: "Now wrap up warm, Miss Jane."
Notes: You work as a maid, and quite like your employers, but your heart belongs to socialism and the suffragette cause. When you said that you would be visiting Europe, your comrades gave you several bundles of pamphlets (in various languages) to distribute in the countries that you are visiting. Of course you mostly do this in your own time, but you can't resist leaving some behind as you travel and during your day-to-day chores. If asked you make no secret of your beliefs, but you don't usually volunteer the information. If necessary you will fight for your liberty, and in defiance of any oppression, especially of women, but your are otherwise opposed to violence
Role-Playing Notes: Tread softly but wear sharp heels and carry a hat-pin... You are superficially a meek servant, but if you see a chance to advance socialism or help the oppressed you will reveal the more flamboyant side of your personality.
